What does it mean to tile the plane? Which shapes can do it? What types of symmetry can you use to create tessellations? Must the patterns always repeat? How can you create a tessellation from an ordinary envelope? And why are mathematicians so excited about the recent discovery of The Hat Tile?

In this hands-on course, we’ll attempt to answer these questions. We’ll do the 2021 Rosenthal-Prize winning activity Tooti Tooti. We’ll reproduce the Large Hat Tiling done at the 15th Gathering 4 Gardner in Atlanta this year. And we’ll study the work of artist MC Escher and both the life and work of amateur mathematician Marjorie Rice.
