In this course, we will play games that reveal the underlying mathematical structures of things, that
address some philosophical/historical/cultural aspects of mathematics, and that foster development of
focusing skills helpful in mathematical exploration. In August 2021 Math Circle leaders from all over got
together at MathFest to share our favorite games. In this course, Rodi will facilitate some of the the
games she shared at MathFest: Opposite Simon Says, Math Red Light Green Light, Mother May I
Addition, Knights and Liars, How Is this Math?, Odd One Out, Mathematician Card Concentration, Tens
Concentration, Nim, Math Would You Rather, and The Need for Numbers. We’ll also take intermissions
from these studies to engage in an unsolved problem or two.
