We will explore these and many more topics, based upon student interest:
- Open (unsolved) problems, including the No Three in a Line Problem and the Optimal Neural Network Problem
- Place value, via Exploding Dots
- Formal logic via storytelling and puppetry
- “I’m Thinking of a Number” algebraic thinking game
- Function Machines
- Opposites/negatives via embodied mathematics
- Set theory
- Toilet-paper math
Both groups of students at Haven will explore the concepts of logic, number theory, functions, algebraic thinking, geometry, and problem-solving skills. Students will use mathematical-thinking skills including asking clarifying questions, stating assumptions, and forming conjectures. The goal is for students to invent and discover math for themselves. We will define math as the study of truth through making and breaking patterns.
