Ages: 10-12

Is it possible to construct a spiral using only straight lines? And by the way, what exactly is a straight line? In this class we will explore how to construct polygons with a compass and straightedge, experiment with polydrons, and create Baravelle Spirals. Depending upon the students’ interests and the direction their inquiries take them, we may also explore the Snowflake Curve and a classic math problem or two (“The Surfer” or “The Bear”). And, of course, we’ll discuss the math history and philosophy relevant to these topics.
